STEM Hub, community partners make JC garden project flourish

The 5th-grade classes, in collaboration with community partners Binghamton University and CHOW, created a school garden (a.k.a. "Wildcat Gardens") this spring consisting of eight raised garden beds -- one to represent each 5th-grade classroom.

Each bed was used to grow a different crop, including peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach, beets and cabbage, and the garden area provided a space for science and math lessons in an outdoor classroom setting. The gardening project used Next Generation science standards and Common Core state mathematics standards.

Students have helped tend the gardens since early May and harvested some of their vegetables on June 15.

The project was made possible with the assistance of the Eastern Southern Tier STEM Hub and Marchuska Brothers Construction LLC in Endicott, which made a generous donation for project supplies.

Broome-Tioga BOCES’ School-to-Careers Partnership serves as the conduit for funding the STEM Hub, employing the experience of BOCES’ regional partners and 15 components school districts, as well as that of Binghamton University and SUNY Broome Community College.
