Combining architecture and raising awareness for food insecurity, “Kids CAN Build” is back for its fourth year.
Nine schools throughout Broome and Tioga counties at the middle school and high school levels are participating in this program. The students will build structures out of cans and display them in schools to win a contest while also donating to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, or CHOW.
They will receive an industry professional to talk through their designs and figure out how to make the cans connect.
Director of the Center For Career & Technical Excellence at Broome-Tioga BOCES Matt Sheehan said over the years, 200 students have gotten involved.
“The thing we did that is unique with this is you don’t need to raise the money as a school, the committee does that,” Sheehan said. “So, you get money as the school to build your structure which all turns into help fill this warehouse behind us. Which is amazing. And over the years, we were saying a stat we need to put this out there is we have raised over $63,000 in three years for this.”
A lot of behind-the-scenes work goes into this for the students, such as calculating how many cans they need, what color cans and how to get them to interlock.
Judging will be held on March 9.
