Operating under the auspices of the Junior Achievement program sponsored by the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce’s Greater Binghamton Educational Outreach Program, students launched a company named “2020” that designed, produced and sold a five-set assortment of reusable mesh produce bags called a “produce pouch.”
Selling stock and soliciting sponsorship donations to finance their operation, the student-run company ultimately generated $7,970 in total revenue. After liquidating, as required under JA guidelines, the students were able to provide a 100% return to stockholders and issue checks totaling $750 to each of five local charities. (see photos below)
Those stellar results were announced Jan. 15 during the students’ formal presentation before a crowd of chamber representatives, business officials, education leaders and family members at the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator in downtown Binghamton.
The JA program connects students with business volunteers to inspire and prepare them to succeed in a global economy by launching a business venture that solves a problem or fulfills a need within the community. The students designed their produce pouch partly as a response to New York’s pending plastic bag ban, but also to promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
