BOCES students team up to help ease local hunger

The fifth annual "CanStruction of the Southern Tier" at the Oakdale Mall is part of an international hunger-relief competition where teams design and build giant structures made entirely out of canned food. Benefiting the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and CHOW, the canstructures (displayed at the mall April 8-15) generated nearly 27,000 food items.

The friendly competition culminates with a series of awards. Teaming up with staff from Visions Federal Credit Union, students in BOCES' Center for Career & Technical Excellence (including SkillsUSA Leadership) were awarded for "Best Structural Integrity." The team comprised of Lockheed Martin staff and BOCES' New Visions Engineering Academy students received the award for "Best Original Design." (see photos)
