Career education teacher receives BOCES' top leadership award

The 2017 Ron Dougherty Award was presented to Coleman during BOCES’ annual employee recognition program on May 17.

A volunteer firefighter, youth soccer and lacrosse coach, and co-chairman of the committee that coordinates youth programming at his church in Windsor, Coleman was nominated by co-workers for his tireless commitment to his students and other young people in the community. Citing his “above and beyond” involvement in BOCES programs such as SkillsUSA, the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house, the annual “Canstruction” competition at the Oakdale Mall, the building of holiday parade floats, and many other special projects and programs, Coleman is described as the “go-to guy” when extra work needs to get done.

“Daniel treats everyone with the utmost respect. He thoroughly enjoys teaching and projects that to all of his students,” the nomination form states. “He is the go-to guy … He is willing to go beyond the standard day, the standard job.”

A former Building Trades instructor at BOCES, Coleman currently teaches Heavy Equipment Repair and Operation. He is chairman of the state committee associated with that trade.

The annual award is named for Ronald E. Dougherty, a member of BOCES’ Board of Trustees from 1976 to 2006 and its president from 1985 to 2005. A 2003 Jefferson Award winner, Dougherty is a model for community leadership and public service. He was a member of the Tioga Central School Board for 11 years, is a former Tioga County legislator and past president of the Broome-Tioga School Boards Association. He also was instrumental in the formation of the Broome-Tioga Coalition for Education.

Candidates for the Ron Dougherty Award are nominated by their peers at BOCES. Applications are then reviewed by a selection committee comprised of a cross-section of employee groups.
