CTE staff team up to create face shields using 3D technology

A team of instructors is using our considerable 3D printing capacity to create face shields that will be donated to front-line workers in the local health care field. Principal Matt Sheehan said the group expects to produce as many as 200 face shields a week.

“As we produce the face shields, we’ll be handing them off to Broome County for distribution to hospitals and other local health agencies,” Sheehan said.

The CTE teachers are working solo, one day each this week, maintaining prescribed “social distancing,” to produce, prepare and package the shields. The team includes instructors Bianca Chapin, Ron Oakley, Eric Saeger, and Matt Hamilton-Jones.

“Matt approached me about the idea of creating some face shields and we broke down the logistics involved with it,” Oakley said.

“We are up to 15 printers,” Sheehan said, “and we have materials to produce as many as 1,000 face shields in the next month.”

“We’re fortunate to have the facility and machines to create such a large number of face shields at once,” Oakley added, “and the ability among multiple staff members to complete the required tasks. I am happy to contribute my time and expertise to such a worthy cause.”
