The event was conducted October 5 as part of a collaboration between the Broome County Promise Zone, Binghamton University, Broome County Mental Health and Broome-Tioga BOCES working with staff from George Washington University.
Committed to improving students success by promoting school culture and climate initiatives that advance the social, emotional and behavioral well-being of youth, the group conducted three sessions designed to garner thoughts and ideas from students, school personnel, and the broader community.
The daylong event was presented through the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools at George Washington University with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is one of four being conducted in communities around the country and focused on learning about the experiences, successes and challenges in each.
The lead agency locally, the Broome County Promise Zone, was established through state Office of Mental Health funding to help children in high-need communities by establishing a model for service delivery that will improve academic achievement and student engagement while mitigating the factors that contribute to school drop-out rates. Promise zones are designed to build the support structures necessary to ensure children are equipped to succeed in school, work and life.
