Students raise hopes and dreams with new home-building project

The project – made possible through funding provided by the Hoyt Foundation – will involve dozens (hundreds, actually) of students over the course of two years as they construct a home that will eventually be delivered to a deserving family within our community.

Working beside local Habitat for Humanity volunteers, students in several BOCES career education programs will gain firsthand, real-world experience as they hone the skills they are developing through their course work. Those courses include heavy equipment repair and operation, masonry, plumbing, electricity and carpentry.

The single-story modular home will be built on BOCES main campus on Glenwood Road and then loaded onto a truck and hauled to a property location yet to be determined. The 1,300 square-foot structure will feature three bedrooms, two full baths and large kitchen and living room areas.

A first for Broome-Tioga BOCES, the home project reflects our commitment to community service in keeping with our primary mission: Enriching lives through education.
