Agriculture Science Students Get Hands-On Lesson in Maple Syrup Production

Broome-Tioga BOCES Agriculture Science II students received a firsthand look at the art and science of maple syrup production, thanks to a visit from Bobby Nugent of Tholhill Farm.
Nugent, a seasoned maple producer with 17 years of experience, shared insights into the syrup-making process, explaining how different boiling times produce varying syrup grades. He walked students through the setup of sap collection lines, the mechanics of running those lines, and the different types of boilers used in production.
Bringing history to life, Nugent shared a family photo book documenting the early days of his maple operation. He then helped students tap a maple tree on the BOCES campus using the lines and taps he provided.
This visit was especially timely, as the Agriculture Science II students will soon begin tapping and collecting their own syrup. To further enhance their learning, the class plans to visit Tholhill Farm to see Nugent’s maple production firsthand, along with his farming and grain operation.
The Agriculture Science team extends its gratitude to the Nugent family for taking the time to share their expertise and provide students with invaluable hands-on experience.
