Employing their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art and math, a group of students recently put their skills to the test competing to see whose machine would be king of the classroom.Enrolled in the new STEAM Summer Academy, students worked in teams to construct a robot and then program it to perform a series of movements and tasks. They got to demonstrate their robotic prowess at a competition July 17 at BOCES’ Tech Academy classroom.
The STEAM summer program is in its first year and includes ninth- and tenth-grade students from Chenango Valley, Chenango Forks and Whitney Point. Organizers expect the number of participating districts to increase in future years.
The academy is a four-week, hands-on program that engages students in project-based learning around science, technology, engineering, math and art through the design cycle. Local engineers and other professionals team up with students in small learning communities to explore and develop projects with real-world applications.
