Students use personal stories to help others
A team of students from Evertech High School has been selected as a semifinalist for the “Bright Spots Case Competition” sponsored by Binghamton University.

The students were challenged with creating a project to help address a prominent issue in our community. The Evertech students chose the theme “Improving Awareness and Treatment Options for Teen Mental Health in Broome County.” Our students are in a unique position to be personally aware of these problems. The team plans to make Youtube videos explaining how they personally have been affected by mental health issues such as depression, PTSD and anxiety, telling their own stories as a way to help other teens recognize the symptoms, find local treatment options, and lessen the stigma of mental illness. They also plan to give presentations to local schools to help raise awareness among teens.

Open to all high schools in the Broome-Tioga BOCES region, the competition first required teams to create a one page “infographic” explaining their problem and their proposed solution. Students from Evertech submitted nine different proposals, one of which was selected by Binghamton University as a semi-finalist. The semi-finalists from all the local school districts were invited to attend a dinner on February 24 at Binghamton University where they got to know each other and met with their BU faculty Advisor.

The teams are scheduled to submit an eight-page document outlining their project and give a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation at BU on March 14.

The team from Evertech is very excited about the opportunity is busily working to bring their project to fruition.
