P-TECH students begin college work
The region’s new P-TECH program got underway at Broome-Tioga BOCES on September 10, when 50 students from the 10 participating districts got together to begin their first college course.

The group will meet at BOCES on the second Wednesday of each month to work on earning three credits for SUNY Broome’s “College Success” program. The students will learn and practice skills used by successful students. They will also begin developing career connections through activities led by industry professionals from local businesses on topics such as information management, professionalism, communication, team dynamics and project management.

P-TECH (pathways in technology early college high school) is a six-year, state grant-funded program that enables students to earn both a high school diploma and associate’s degree, the latter being at no cost. Year one begins at the students’ home school, followed by a year two that is split between engineering studies at Broome-Tioga BOCES and health studies at the Binghamton City School District.

Each student will be given an iPad purchased through the P-TECH grant. It will be used for course work outside of class time as well as for collaborating with other students on various projects.
