First Friends Preschool is a State Education Department-approved half-day program for three-and four-year olds conducted in elementary schools from September to June. Classes also are available during the summer. NYS certified special educators and related service therapists (occupational, physical, speech), assisted by classroom aides, teach classes that include up to eight preschoolers with disabilities and seven non-disabled peers. Children learn from each other through play, music, stories, art, movement, and games. They also learn important language, social, and motor skills. Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child's learning through notebook communication, (a monthly newsletter) and by participating in field trips, classroom activities, and parent/teacher conferences.
