School Library System
The School Library System (SLS) provides a vehicle for sharing resources through interlibrary loan among component school districts, other BOCES, colleges and public and special libraries. It also coordinates database development of school-owned resources and oversees library automation services. SLS staff members facilitate in-service workshops to help libarary media specialists stay current with technology and to support school curriculum. Resources are available on loan from the School Library System professional library. Posters, books, props, puppets, big books and multiple copy sets of books can also be borrowed.
Library Automation The School Library System currently supports the OPALS open source library automation system which provides participants with access to over 800,000 school-owned resources, as well as up-to-the-minute circulation statistics and cataloging capabilities. OPALS is the beginning process of a “meta-search” tool; currently a search in OPALS simultaneously searches the NOVEL databases (Gale and EBSCO), C.E.R.F. and Grolier Online.
