The Course

New Visions is a rigorous academic program for college-bound high school seniors who are interested in careers in education and human development, law and government or health. New Visions students learn and work along side professionals in these fields, effectively connecting their academic pursuits with real-world learning experiences.

The programs integrate English, economics, and the Syracuse University Project Advance Public Affairs 101 course with the Career Academy area of study. Students who complete the program receive four high school credits and Syracuse University college credit for completing Public Affairs 101. In addition, students are prepared to take the AP English literature exam.

At the conclusion of the New Visions Career Academies, students are expected to have done the following:

  • Applied academic knowledge to professional tasks
  • Developed career plans based on experience and prepared for professional careers
  • Debated and discussed current federal and state economics, social, legal, educational and health issues
  • Identified, used, and integrated the relevance of educational and human development and health systems to the government, economics, and English components of the course
  • Written creative and critical essays, and researched topics related to their career academy
  • Learned and employed exemplary interpersonal and decision-making skills that are essential to becoming effective professionals.

Setting

New Visions classrooms for the Education and Human Development and Law and Government academies are located on the Binghamton University campus. The Health Academy classrooms are located at Lourdes Hospital. Students experience a real work environment and meet, explore, and learn from professionals in their career academy area.

Students rotate through the work sites on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, reserving Monday and Friday for course work in English and Social Studies. The classes meet daily from 8 to 11 a.m. They return to their home schools to complete the afternoon schedule of courses, including extracurricular and after-school activities.

Student Requirements

Admission into New Visions is competitive and highly selective. Successful applicants must:

  • Be juniors in good standing at their home schools
  • Have demonstrated an interest and desire to learn about careers in education and human development, law and government, or health.
  • Have a minimum grade average of 90 percent
  • Have completed three years of math and science
  • Have demonstrated a high level of maturity and responsibility and the ability to work in a team as well as individually
  • Be recommended by a school guidance counselor and two members of the home school faculty
  • Plan to attend college or pursue other post-secondary education.

Recruitment and Selection

The Broome-Tioga BOCES January school counselors meeting traditionally marks the beginning of the recruitment period for the New Visions Career Academies. During February and March, the New Visions programs are presented to junior classes in the home school districts. In addition to the teacher presentations, the current New Visions students describe their personal experiences in the program. These visitations are well received and allow the teacher to distribute applications to prospective candidates. The recruitment period culminates in an open house at the end of March. Visits to the New Visions classroom allows the potential student a closer look at the setting, curriculum, and program requirements. After applications are completed, student interviews are conducted. The accepted students attend an orientation program in June.
