Adkins Career Decision-Making Program - A career planning workshop designed to
increase students' awareness of their goals, personality, interests, skills, and abilities
in relation to the world of work. Students develop their own career plan. (Grades 9-12)
Career Expo - A one-day event for sophomores held at Binghamton University to encourage
career awareness among young people. Business speakers provide information to students on various
careers. (Grade 10)
Career Exploration Week - An opportunity for students to visit local work sites to observe
what skills are needed and to understand the relationship between academics and careers. (Grades 9-12)
Career Pathway Guides - This booklet is useful for guidance counselors and various
classes. Topics include the career planning process, self-assessment, career information, workplace
expectations, resumes, etc. (Grades 8-12)
Citizens Police Academy - An 8-10 week program conducted at a local police station
to help students explore the law enforcement field. Topics such as criminal procedure law, penal
law, and narcotics identification and investigation are covered. (Grades 10-12)
Classroom Speakers - Professionals from the workplace come into the classroom to
discuss their job requirements, responsibilities and career options. (Grades K-12)
First Impressions - Students visit a work site and participate in a mock interview
conducted by a human resources professional who then provides feedback and discusses topics such
as applications, resumes, cover letters, employer expectations, etc. (Grades 10-12)
Lawyers in the Classroom - Lawyers, paralegals, or legal secretaries speak in the
classroom on career preparation and career opportunities in the legal field. (Grades 9-12)
Learn to Earn - This six-session program offers high school seniors the opportunity to
improve job search skills. Company representatives cover such topics as employment applications/resumes,
marketing yourself, employment outlook, interviewing skills, employer expectations, and mock
employment interviews. (Grade 12)
Parent Career Connection Workshop - An evening workshop for parents of 8th and 9th grade students
which gives them an understanding of how to assist their child in developing a career plan.
Pre-employment Training - A classroom session offering high school students the opportunity
to improve job search skills. Businesses send representatives to discuss employment applications,
resumes, marketing yourself, employment outlook, interviewing skills, and employer expectations.
(Grades 9-12)
Presentations/Demonstrations - Business representatives volunteer to demonstrate some aspect
of the workplace in the classroom. (Grades K-12)
Roberson and Kopernik on the Road - Representatives from Roberson Museum and Science Center
and Kopernik Observatory are available to conduct programs on various topics such as electricity
and magnetism, macroinvertebrates, constellations and others. (Grades 1-8 - depending on program)
Student Shadows - Local businesses provide students with a one-on-one opportunity to see
firsthand the everyday activities involved in a specific career of interest to them. Shadow information
packets can be obtained from the school Guidance Department. (Grades 9-12)
Student Tours - A group of students visit a local worksite to observe workplace skills
in action, see how an organization operates, and learn about career options. (Grades K-12)
Success in the World of Work - A video presentation featuring local businesses introducing
students to the world of work. Highlights include: first impressions, communication skills, teamwork,
dependability, attitudes in the workplace, and computer skills. (Grades 9-12)
Videos - Career awareness/pre-employment skills videos are available on loan to teachers.
(Grades K-12)
Visiting Vehicles - Drivers bring their vehicles to the school and discuss with students
what they do on the job. For example, firetruck, ambulance, tow truck, tractor trailer, postal
vehicle, law enforcement vehicles, produce truck, public works, etc. This program is available in
the Fall and Spring. (Grades K-6)
Volunteer Connection - Students are connected with local agencies offering volunteer
opportunities. (Grades 8-12)
Youth Apprenticeship - Youth Apprenticeship combines school- and work-based learning in a
specific occupational area and is designed to lead directly into either a related, postsecondary
program or entry-level job. Youth Apprentices work 10-20 hours per week and may earn up to 5 Regents
credits. Students must apply for this multi-year program in their sophomore year. This is a
paid position.
